Goodbye PubliSite, hello Sitesuma

24 Jul 2012

[the following post is written from the perspective of a career in software development, but the advice and observations apply to plenty of other industries too] I have been working with the good people of Line Industries for over 5 years. That’s a long time by my standards, certainly longer than anywhere else I’ve worked. [...]

Dropping the BOM! or: Who’s the BOM King?

01 Jul 2012

OK, advanced warning – things are about to get a little geeky… I’ve been working lately on a PHP project – I’ve written my fair share of PHP in the past, but for many years I’ve been lucky enough to develop almost exclusively in C#. So my (temporary) return to PHP has nudged me out of my [...]

Salary Timer, Tax Calculator and Raise Calculator updated for 2012/13 tax year

18 Jun 2012

A couple of months late, but I’ve finally updated the Salary Timer, Tax Calculator and Raise Calculator for the 2012/13 UK tax year. I have to confess, I’ve lost the enthusiasm for these projects. They were fun back in the day, and indeed the Salary Timer is the raison d’être for this website, but that [...]

At the day job: taking a break from Microsoft for a while: up to my neck in PHP, MySQL, Apache, WordPress, Apigee, Zuora, to name but a few!

Sad to read the news of Iain (M.) Banks’ terminal diagnosis, a terrible loss for UK science fiction.

For the next few days I will be existing in that strange nether-world where half the clocks in my house are on BST, the rest still on GMT. And I’m never quite sure which is which… (I could just look at my phone, but trying to guess is much more fun!)

Gutted to learn that Google are “retiring” Reader in July. Reader is so thoroughly interwoven into my daily technology use across a multitude of platforms and apps, I’ll be very sad to see it go. On the flip side, maybe this is a positive thing - I wonder if there are better alternatives out there, which I’ve ignored because of my blinkered devotion to the Google Reader API?

The hipsters have been and gone, the privacy worriers and wannabe pro-photographers have abandoned ship, and everyone is sick to death of the trademark retro filters - Instagram is finally uncool enough for me to start using it!

12 Feb 2013

At the day job: reviewing a vulnerability report produced by a white-hat hacking team which our client employed to attack the web application I built for them! I’m proud of how our site performed, but it’s good to be reminded I still have plenty to learn…

At the day job: new blog post: Introducing our new Service Status Site

Popped to the supermarket and picked up one of the latest smartphones with my weekly grocery shopping. It’s like living in an episode of Tomorrow’s World…

17 Jan 2013

Good grief, it’s been over a year since I last mentioned my smartphone buying procrastination, and I’m *still* stuck in a state of analysis paralysis! Currently trying to choose between the Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola RAZR i, HTC Desire X and Samsung Galaxy Ace 2. (I’ve given up waiting for the Nexus 4 to come back in stock). I’m sure this was easier when all I had to choose from was a Nokia 5110, or a … Nokia 5110.

Tax controversies aside, next Christmas I think it might be easier to get my salary paid directly to amazon.co.uk…
