About AGFC
AGFC - A brief History (1993 - )
In 1993 a group of employees from the company Allied Steel and Wire got
together and decided it would be a good idea to form a 5 a side team. The Team
agreed to play every Wednesday night and the venue would be Cardiff University
at 'Tal-y-Bont'. From the original members of the Team Nick Kesterton and
Michael Cooper played for a number of years with Mike Cooper retiring in the
late 1990's and Nick retiring in 2003.
From the current group of players Rich Williams joined in 1994, Ian Major in
1995 and Anthony Thickett in 1997. Tony Beresford, Huw Dobson and Steve Knowles
all joined the club before the 1990's were up.
Although primarily a 5 a side team AGFC did play the very occasional 11 a
side match, the first of which was in the mid 1990's. For a couple of years AGFC
played just 2 sides - the Strange XI and Cardiff Probation Services and there
were typically no more than 2-3 games played in a year.
The late 1990's saw AGFC adopt their full name Archfarchnad Gwasanaethau
Football Club for the first time and appropriately the name was decided upon on
a vote in the Students Bar at Tal-y-Bont Campus. The famous green shirt was also
worn for the first time during this period while in the Summer of 1997 AGFC
embarked on their first and only tour to Cornwall losing 2-nil to the Newlyn
Fishermen.
The new millenium saw AGFC adopt a more formal structured approach to
arranging matches, organising their kit and team selection. The number of games
played by AGFC also increased dramatically commencing with the 2001/02 season.
The 2002/03 season saw the first formal records and statistics kept.
September 2003 saw AGFC hold its first AGM at Rhiwbina Tennis Club in Cardiff
to reflect on the previous seasons matches, agree terms of reference for the
club and hold a rewards ceremony.
