Report:
The last game of the season seemed to galvanise AFC into action....suddenly there were names in the hat that hadn`t been seen for months!
An added edge surrounding the fixture was that it was Calvin`s last appearance for the club and we had accumulated 54 points from the previous 26 games....just one less than at the same stage in the famous 04/05 season!
With the opposition an unknown quantity, supplemented by AlexB and Panny to make it 12 v 12, the game started tentatively. Adding to the slightly strange atmosphere, Calvin hadn`t made the kickoff due to domestic commitments. But AGFC kept probing and opened the scoring with a peach of a strike from Fraser into the top corner.
The oppostion were far from out of it at half-time when AGFC switched Calvin for AlexB who had played his part in softening-up Steve`s Heath Hospital XI.
Straight after the restart, Calvin cracked-open the defence with a deft lob that left the keeper stranded. Two more from Mr Hewitt and Calvin showed how lethal the attacking machine that is AGFC has now become. At the back the defence was called into action with a strike that TonyB managed to tip onto the bar and several mean-looking forrays mostly snuffed-out by an efficient back four led by Mr Thickett (back from a groin injury...!!), Dave and Steve. Huw and Mark also did well, denying the Heath front men access to the wide channels.
The AGFC defence was breached finally with a probing run into the box and an early strike that left defenders stranded and TonyB with no chance: 4-1.
Back roared AGFC with more goals from the good Mr Hewitt (who was by now sensing a hat-trick from his wide-left position), Fraser and Jamal leaving the Heath lads shell-shocked, down and out. The 13th biggest win in AGFC`s illustrious history was a fitting way to send the oriental goal-machine on his journey east (I`ll send you the stats of your career performance for AGFC, Cal, when I`ve sorted them out).
And so endeth a great season: only 6 losses, 3 draws, 18 wins. Goals: 114-65 No defeat by more than 2 goals, 9 hat-tricks, Calvin got the Club`s first-ever double hat-trick (v Tom`s XI).... probably only one bad performance: the second half v Jim`s XI when 6 goals were leaked.....and, perhaps most satisfying of all, we finished with 57 points.....one more than the 04/05 season when we drew our 27th game!!
Well played, everyone: we beat Wales & West for the first time ever and we subdued the owd enemy, Strange, with wins of 4-1, 4-2, 6-5 (Calvin 5),
4-3 (against the odds from 3-1 down), against losses of 0-1 and 1-2, and the famous "Enda" 4-4 draw.
Special mention of Simon (midfield general turned keeper), Booty (the bloke from Stoke), Jamal (Moroccan spiderman/goal-poacher), Panny (a genuine footballer when sober), "John Aldridge" Rich, Enda "the Engine" Hayes, Huw (still alive!), Mark (still mobile!), Steve (cultured defender despite lack of hair) .......and well done to all others who played this season!
Big Bad Tone.
