Report:
The first match of 2007 failed to produce the required result for AGFC as they crashed to another heavy defeat at the hands of the Western Mail at a blustery and rain soaked Treforst on Friday night. Put simply AGFC were guilty of some basic defensive errors and sloppy finishing as they failed to make the most of chances on offer.
The Western Mail, with plenty of quality in the final third, relished the chance to come forward in the first half and scored three goals to effectively end the match as a contest after the first 45 minutes.
In the second half AGFC fared better and only conceded two goals, one of which was an outrageous shot from near the half way line which was lucky to clear the AGFC keeper. For the last 30 minutes Maj took to the field to the replace the injured Carl and looked like a man possessed, intent on disrupting the Western Mail passing patterns by any way possible. In the final 5 minutes AGFC's two stand out players of the match Terry and Jamal combined to grab a consolation goal as a long range shot from Terry cannoned off the crossbar and towards Jamal who found the corner of the goal with a deft header. Jamal picked up his first man of the match award of the season with an all action display in the middle of the park in the first half and a spell leading the line in the second; combining energetic running and tenacious tackling.
AGFC could take something out of the game from the chances they created in front of goal and the commitment from the back four, but with back to back fixtures against old rivals Loco Splott and Jim's XI on the horizon AGFC will be looking for a sharp turn around in fortunes to secure a first victory since October last year.
