Report:
AGFC started the season determined to put behind them a disastrous campaign last term. The side had to contend with a number of absentees including Enda; the newly appointed captain. A new season brought a new experimental formation with AGFC starting with an ambitious three man defence supported by wing backs. The new formation brought dividends in the first half as Jamal and Fraser caused havoc in the opposition half. Fraser opened his account with a header while Jamal doubled the AGFC lead with a neat finish putting AGFC in the box seat. Western Mail managed to pull a goal back before Jamal extended the lead soon after with a quality run through the middle of the opposition defence and good finish. Rich got in on the act before the interval after he latched onto a cross field ball from Thicket and shot past the Western Mail keeper. An AGFC error let the Western Mail get the final goal of the half.
The second half was not so fruitful for AGFC as players tired and the younger Western Mail side battled back to score twice in the second half. Fraser managed to put his name on the score sheet once again with a strong run, holding off a WM defender and finishing clinically. WM pressurised gamely but could not find an equaliser in the dying stages. Thicket turned in a good performance in his favoured central midfield role while Rich was industrious and penetrative on the left side, but it was Jamal with a combination of continental flair and workrate in closing down defenders that earned him the nod for man of the match.
