Report:

It was strange to see AGFC turn in such a flat uninspired performance following their rousing early season win over the Western Mail in their previous match. It was difficult to put your finger on why they were so disappointing as their opponents the Llantwit Vets, although competent and combative, were hardly world beaters. It was the Vets who opened the scoring in the first period but AGFC were soon level as Fraser glanced in a header from a Craig B cross. In the first half Scott and Craig B did add some zest to the proceedings, both looking lively and interested in breaking the deadlock, while the defence, and Pete in particular, were adept at keeping the Vets attack at bay.

The second period saw Dean make his AGFC debut in place of Scott and AGFC tried to press forward but too often could not find the final pass to release the forward men. The lack of midfield creativity and a shortage of ideas in attack was balanced by a defence who were mostly comfortable in dealing with the Vets attacks. With 80 minutes on the clock the match seemed to be petering out to an uninspired draw when a Vets player picked up the ball wide on the left flank and unleashed a cross come shot which fortuitously found its way into the top corner of the net. This proved a dagger to AGFC hearts as heads dropped and legs tired and the will to find an equaliser evaporated into the warm Treforest night air. The Vets rubbed salt into the wounds by finding a third goal as a Vets shot cannoned off Huw’s arm and just bounced over the line. Craig H turned in an assured display in the AGFC goal to dispel any demons that may have remained following his erratic performance against the WM, but Simon claimed the man of the match award for being the best of what was frankly a mediocre bunch of outfield players.
