Report:
Friday night saw AGFC restore some pride to the green shirt following a number of below par performances. Tactically they got it right this time, reverting to a formation including one striker and five in midfield (one holding) for the first time this season. It helped that Ryans Team gave space and time to play but it also took a spirited & determined effort from the whole AGFC Team to make this a memorable night for the club.
In the first half an AGFC side, low on confidence, rode their luck with Ryan’s Team going close on a number of occasions & twice hitting the woodwork. However, it was AGFC who opened the scoring when Rich, playing as lone striker, latching onto a good through ball on the right and finished well with his right foot, clipping the ball over the onrushing keeper. Ryan’s Team were to respond with two goals of their own although chances were made by both sides with Rich going close with a lob and having a shot cleared off the line while Jamal went close with a back post header.
The second half saw Cooper taking his place in the middle of defence, Calvin taking up the lone striker berth and Maj playing the second period in goal barking orders at his defence and midfield. It was Calvin who scored the equaliser, outpacing the Ryan’s Team centre half and finishing with his second bite at the cherry after the keeper had parried his first effort. It was all to play for with 15 minutes to go with AGFC looking the more likely to find a winner. A smart one – two between Enda and Dean on the right flank saw Calvin finish an Enda cross and put AGFC in the ascendancy. It was left to Enda to put the match out of RT’s reach with a fine shot from just outside the penalty area which found the top corner.
A very satisfying win for AGFC with all the Team contributing to the final result. However, two players stood out for the full 90 minutes as Steve made a welcome return to the back four to add calmness and consistency to the proceedings while it was the captain Enda who turned in an all action display, covering every bit of manufactured grass as he took personal responsibility to drag AGFC from their recent malaise.
